A few days ago, an earthquake occurred on the border between Syria and Turkiye, with a magnitude as high as 7.8. There were many aftershocks, all of which were between a magnitude of 5.0 to 7.5. The earthquake caused devastating losses to the people of Syria and Turkiye, with more than 20,000 casualties. It was one of the strongest earthquakes in the region within at least a century.
The Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH) held a meeting between executive directors on February 8, and have decided to establish a Syria and Turkiye earthquake disaster fundraising committee led by our Vice President, Thay Peng Hong. Assistance to earthquake victims across the country, and call for Malaysians to actively donate to earthquake victims, who are in dire need of aid in Syria and Turkey.
KLSCAH will cooperate with humanitarian aid organisation MyCare for this fundraising effort. The organisation has extensive experience in foreign disaster relief and has long been carrying out humanitarian aid operations throughout Southeast Asia and the Middle East. We will then release the funds raised to MyCare, which will then carry out earthquake relief operations in Syria and Turkiye.
Furthermore, the KLSCAH Cultural and Education Committee plans to organise a charity concert on February 26 with musicians, music groups, and choirs from all over Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, to raise funds for Syrian and Turkish , who are surviving these hard times for the best of their abilities. Both the KLSCAH Cultural and Education Committee and Choir hope to bring positive energy through their music performances, to encourage the public to donate generously to raise funds for the victims.
