The nomination period of Civil Society Award 2007 started from Dec 2007 till May 2008 and the Civil Society Award ceremony was on 28th August. Selection Committee Member of the Civil Society Award elected Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI), Kedah State Quit Rent Review Taskforce and Persatuan Kampung Sg.Terentang Rawang as the winners. They considered that these three organizations have been fight beyond race, status and social background to uphold civil rights, open up democratic space and bear the responsibilities with no fear.

First winner: Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI)
Reason for award:
GMI has been launching varieties of activities and fighting to abolish the Internal Security Act (ISA) positively. GMI has organized peace rallies, processions frequently and submitted memorandums to SUHAKAM. It also gives help to the family members of those arrested under the ISA all around Malaysia.
Second Winner: Jawatankuasa Khas Semakan Cukai Tanah Negeri Kedah
Reason for award:
The taskforce was initially established by the internal group members of Kedah Chinese Assembly Hall and gathered by different ethnics groups or individual in Kedah later in order to confront Barisan Nasional government that announced the increasing of quit rent till 9956% in 2006. It has collected for more than 120000 signatures and submitted to the Menteri Besar of Kedah as an urge to the state government for revoking this published command. After the election on 8th March, Pakatan Rakyat state government promised to revise this issue.
Third Winner: Persatuan Kampung Sg.Terentang Rawang(Rayuan Mengalihkan Talian Penghantaran Kuasa Tinggi 275kv &Bantahan Paksaan Pemindahan Penduduk Setempat)
Reason for award:
The Association protested that Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) would build a high voltage cable tower at Sg.Terentang Rawang. The residents carried out a series of protesting campaign such as met with Minister of Housing and Local Government, Menteri Besar of Selangor, TNB and other organizations and even organized peace rally to voice out their objection. After the election on 8th March, Khalid Ibrahim as the new Menteri Besar of Selangor, suggested to implement either bypass way or laying underground cable as the solutions of this issue.
