Women Section of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH-Women) issue a press statement to lament and condemn the comment made by the Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar suggesting that non Malays are more tolerance towards sexual violation involving under aged children (statutory rape) as being insensitive and  inappropriate.

The chairlady for the said Women Section Madam Ng Geok Chee said she is appalled that a deputy minister should made such baseless and unsubstantiated  comment about a particular race’s attitudes towards statutory rape. She pointed out that crime has no boundary or race barriers. it is utterly wrong to insinuate that there are certain races in the society that condoned sexual abuses against under aged children.

“Let’s be very clear that the issue here is about statutory rape. People, be it of any race or ethnicity background, love their children and wish for the best for them. No one, regardless of race or ethnicity can tolerate any form of sexual abuse upon their children. The statistic, to an extend, only reflect the truth of the Malay community make up the majority of the population in Malaysia.”

She further point out that the deputy minister’s presumption was not substantiated by any scientific or anthropological research. There could be other reasons for not reporting eg fear of further embarrassment, but deaf innately nothing to do with ethnic tolerance or acceptance.

She urge the deputy minister to exercise caution and do his homework before embark on such comment. She also reminded the deputy minister that It is the duty and responsibility of the government stakeholders to combat crime, have consultation with the enforcement agency and come up with effective measures to ensure a safe and crime free environment for our children.
