Introduction:

In a race to vaccinate against the pandemic, the Malaysian government has finally confirmed COVID-19 vaccines sets to be received on our shores, and is fervently in talks for plans of action. The National Vaccination Plan (NVP), scheduled to roll out in February, is currently undergoing finalisation by the Special Committee on Covid-19 Vaccine Supply Access Guarantee (JKJAV). According to Health Minister, Dr. Adham Baba, the vaccines that will be administered firsthand are from Pfizer-BioNTech, AstraZeneca-University of Oxford (AstraOxford) and a vaccine supply from COVAX.

Pharmagiants and institutes that the Malaysian government are in negotiation for vaccines with span across the globe; German Pfizer-BioNTech, British-Swedish AstraOxford, Russian Gamaleya, Sinovac and CanSinoBIO from China.

The choice of vaccine will not be given to the public, reported Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) Minister Khairy Jamaluddin. Reason given is due to the delicate nature of certain vaccines. In his announcement, Khairy explained that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is required to be kept under ultra-low temperatures. Therefore, they’re suited for distribution throughout urban areas, as the logistics range are of short distances.

With the worrying increase in numbers, authorities and experts in healthcare are busy working on the right information given to the public, in order to avoid spread of misinformation across the nation.
