【Forum】One Pen, Ten Thousands Men — — Media Freedom in Malaysia

Online news portal The Malaysian Insider(TMI), which turned eight last month, has been blocked by the Multimedia Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

Since the disclosure of 2.6 billion scandal, Malaysian government has continued to crackdown of alternate news portals and  tightening the noose of censorship around the necks of Malaysia’s vibrant online news portals.

It noted the block on TMI followed similar censorship against regional news site Asia Sentinel, publishing platform Medium.com, whistleblower publication Sarawak Report, and socio-political blogs OutSyed The Box, Din Turtle and Minaq Jingo.

The draconian action clearly violates point seven of the Multimedia Super Corridor Bill of Guarantees which guarantees no Internet censorship.

The government also plans to table amendments to the Communications and Multimedia Act to introduce heavier penalties for offences under the Act.

Malaysians should be very concerned with the increased cases of Internet censorship by the government in recent months, signalling worse days ahead for freedom of expression and information in Malaysia.
