{"id":5662,"date":"2012-10-25T09:30:55","date_gmt":"2012-10-25T01:30:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/klscah.org.my\/?p=5662"},"modified":"2020-09-30T15:32:01","modified_gmt":"2020-09-30T07:32:01","slug":"educationists-blueprint-too-rushed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/klscah.org.my\/en\/2012\/10\/5662.html","title":{"rendered":"Educationists: Blueprint too rushed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KUALA LUMPUR: Local educationists have repeated the claim that the National Education Blueprint 2013-2025 does not reflect Malaysia\u2019s multicultural society.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/klscah.org.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/GBM-edu-05.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-5663\" title=\"GBM-edu 05\" src=\"https:\/\/klscah.org.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/GBM-edu-05-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/klscah.org.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/GBM-edu-05-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/klscah.org.my\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/GBM-edu-05-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>As such, 25 groups forming the Coalition on Plan of Action for Malaysia (GBM) demanded that Putrajaya extend its deadline for the blueprint\u2019s feedback period to March 31, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>They argued that the current deadline \u2013 Oct 20, 2012 \u2013 is too rushed for the public to comment on a plan that will be in force for 12 years.<\/p>\n<p>GBM policy adviser Lim Teck Ghee said: \u201cA blueprint written by officials, meeting in secrecy, without providing statistics and selectively choosing feedback, is the wrong road to take.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lim said that the government appeared to be worried with the popularity of vernacular education, and as such deliberately left this part out of the blueprint.<\/p>\n<p>With this in mind, GBM presented 31 recommendations that they hoped the government would consider before setting the blueprint in stone.<\/p>\n<p>Among the recommendations presented today at the KL-Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300;\">the inclusion of vernacular, religious and private schools as part of the programme;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300;\">delaying History from being a compulsory pass subject for the SPM examination until key reforms were made to the existing curriculum;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300;\">including the appreciation of multiculturalism and human diversity into the curriculum;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300;\">addressing the issue of school drop-outs;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300;\">upgrading technical and vocational training institutions;<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300;\">decentralising public education, with the focus of education resting solely on the federal government; and<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #993300;\">addressing the growing problem of racial and religious prejudice in schools.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Today, many of the groups claimed that the blueprint did not seem to address many of these concerns. Some even alleged that education was being politicised.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on history, GBM executive committee member Thasleem Ibrahim said that the blueprint did not cover History as a compulsory pass subject, which he claimed was being \u201cbulldozed\u201d into the system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir political decisions,\u201d he said, referring to government officials, \u201cseem to be overtaking the concerns of the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thasleem then asked Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak to follow through with the depoliticisation of the local education system, telling the premier to \u201cwalk the talk\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He also suggested that the implementation of the blueprint be delayed until at least 2014, adding that the government needed to review it thoroughly.<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the politicisation of education, Lim said that the blueprint was not a document that appeared overnight, and went through several layers of vetting before it would come through.<\/p>\n<p>As such, he alleged that a political agenda was very strongly inherent in the blueprint.<\/p>\n<p>GBM exco member K Arumugam then asked why the government blueprint failed to take mother tongue education into account.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAssimilation is not a problem.
